Western Adventures
By Robert Clack
Wes Violet grew up on a farm in NW Ohio where he owned horses and raised beef cattle. Interested in the industry his acquaintance with Presbyterian Minister Marie Hubbel was fortuitous. Marie introduced Wes to the book, “All Creatures Big & Small” which had a profound impact on his thinking then and now. Interestingly Marie graduated from Creswell High School many years ago yet this memory and relationship influenced the decision to go west.
Wes externship was in Ocala, Florida where emphasis was on equine medicine and surgery servicing many large thoroughbred and Arabian farms in the area. Upon graduation from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
It is his trip after graduation that connects him again with Marie Hubbel. Shortly after graduation Wes took a trip out west looking for a job in “a beater of a car,” which took him half way to California before dying. He chose to continue west rather than go back to Ohio, a decision which ended up with him interviewing for a veterinary positions between stops from LA, California to Seattle, Washington on a one-way bus ticket. After countless interviews he ended up with a position in Eugene, Oregon from a referral another Vet clinic (Eugene, Oregon) that he had not even interviewed with. His memory of this adventure includes sleeping in a mission in Cheyenne, Wyoming because “he was a dirt poor student.”
His trip was particularly important because he had met the love of his life, Kristine before he embarked. Kristine and Wes who were two years apart both in school years and time while Wes worked in Eugene. They were married in 1983. He later founded Pleasant Hill Vet Clinic before making the later transition to Creswell.
Kristine finished up her schooling at Ohio State University in 1983 after previously obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Cincinnati. As a student, she was a live-in extern and equine technician at the veterinary college, living in the basement of the Vet Hospital during her senior year. Originally she planned on being on the research side of Veterinary Medicine but liked the clinical practice and working with food animals, particularly dairy cows.
She worked with Keith Nichol in Cottage Grove where she was the first women Vet and 2nd female Rotarian there. Kristine founded Forest Valley Vet in 1986 which is currently located on Mosby Creek Road in Cottage Grove.
In 1993 they formed Hillview Vet Clinic in Pleasant Hill pooling their experience:
Wes, has worked in large animal practice for now 24 years, his work is varied in all aspects of general equine medicine. His areas of interest are equine reproduction, lameness diagnosis and treatment, along with neonatal/pediatric medicine. His extensive experience in equine pre-purchase evaluation, has been certified in equine embryo transfer, and recently received specialized training in complete equine dentistry.
Kristine, with over 22 years of practice, includes bovine/equine medicine, small ruminant medicine/surgery, relief work, emergency medicine, small animal medicine and surgery, including ferrets, rabbits, and pocket pets. She also has specialized interests in surgical cases, both soft tissue and orthopedic.
In July 2004 they opened South Willamette Vet Clinic whose design resembles a Kentucky horse farm gleaned from much research and visits to other Veterinary Clinics after two years of intensive planning. The clinic is over 10,000 square feet with four examination rooms, four horse stalls, and an overnight kennel.
This is the culmination of many years of study and hard work. They are working together with Wes concentrating on the large animal side and Kristine specializing in small animals. Presently the practice has more of a large animal presence but gradually the small animal side has balanced things. Together they make a very personalized professional team by blending strengths, interests and individual passions into their work life.
What they enjoy most with their spare time skiing, backpacking or just enjoying time with their family, Nathan (freshmen), Camilee (7th grade), and Serena (4th grade).
