OurLocalBusiness - THOMAS E. ELLIS, LICENSED TAX CONSULTANT - 09/11/07
By Vicky Wilson
The office of Thomas E. Ellis, located at 25 North 1st Street, Suite #1 , is sandwiched between Los Cabos and CareCo Tire & Auto. Thomas shares this office with his wife of 40 years, Colleen (Bugby). She has a real estate business, Ellis Real Estate.
Ellis has been in the accounting/tax business for 35 years. 13 of those years he's had his own business, 10 of which have been at the current location. He does accounting, payroll, and tax preparation. Ellis hires an assistant during his busiest time, January through April, otherwise he works alone. During tax time he works extended hours, even opening on Sundays when necessary. Monday through Saturdays 9:00 to 6:00 are the tax time hours available, after April the hours change to 9:00 to 5:00 , Monday through Friday. He is happy to accept new clients and notes that he files taxes electronically at no charge.
Looking around his office you can't mistake the fact that he's a huge Oregon Ducks fan (having graduated from the U of O himself). He has season tickets to the football games and gets to as many basketball games as he can. He is also a big fan and supporter of Luke Jackson.
Thomas has been a Creswell resident since the 60's. He has 3 grown children, 2 daughters and a son, and is very proud to say that he also has 2 granddaughters (which are adorably displayed in slide show format on his computer).
He is a Vietnam veteran, having served in the US Army from 1965-1967. For 11 months of 1967 he was a squad leader in the jungles of Vietnam .
Ellis is currently a member of Kiwanis and is a Chamber member. He is also a member of the Oregon Association of Tax Consultants (OATC) and Oregon Association of Independent Accountants (OAIA). Both of these associations are for continuing education.
When asked for a piece of tax advice, he thought we should know this: If Ballot Measure 30 (the current temporary personal income tax surcharge) passes, it will be retroactive for the 2003 tax year. Filing your Oregon State income tax before the vote on February 2nd will do you no good. The state is holding all tax returns that come in before the vote and suggests that filing is not done until after February 2nd. Ellis has a break down of what that additional tax charge will be, based on your families income.
You may reach the office of Thomas Ellis by telephone at 895-5000.
