Fishin' Musician

By Robert Clack

His best memory as an entertainer was when his band (blue grass) volunteered to play after school hours at Francis Willard Elementary School in Eugene. During this optional concert for the kids, the band was surprised to see the gym almost full of elementary school children. Then when they started playing the kids went crazy, the gym was so loud with kids screaming they could hardly hear ourselves play. At that moment they may have glimpsed what The Beatles must have felt like. Since that time he has played in countless nightclubs and concerts but never again had a performance when the audience just went nuts!

Always liking to fish he never thought he would make money at it. Dealing with crowds of people whenever performing and then having a day to fish by himself was a good balance for keeping his sanity. The fresh air, nature, and solitude was the healthy side of his lifestyle

which was away from the bars, alcohol, noise, people late nights, etc. As the years went by He found himself burning out on the nightlife and enjoying fishing more. He became good at catching fish because I practiced the sport as much as he practiced the guitar and piano. He started to teach other people how to fish after he turned 40.

In 1973 the band played in Creswell at the local bar which today is the B & B. In 1978 the lead guitarist and bass player both lived in Creswell and they rehearsed here and like the small town atmosphere. In 1979 Tom moved from Eugene to Cottage Grove and lived there for 13 years. Wanting to be a little closer to Eugene where he was working most of the time he found a place with his future wife who mother lived a couple of miles outside Creswell. Shortly thereafter they bought a house here and plan to stay for long time, "it's a hassle to move," Tom says.

The thing he finds most enjoyable about being a guide is taking a person down a river that is unfamiliar to them and showing them all the spots that hold fish or places on the river that are unique in animal life, roaring rapids, plant life, and beautiful mansions (homes). He also enjoys the variety of people and their reasons for drifting down a river with most are wonderful people full of curiosity wanting to learn the river and the fish.

Toms perfect day would be good company, good weather, good fishing and a good tip.

Liking Creswell because of the small town atmosphere, he wishes there be a slow down on adding more houses here. "The traffic is starting to back up during rush hour!,"  and some of the old buildings downtown are rundown, they either need remodeling or should be town down. It makes the town look cheap."

Take Tom up on his perfect day. Thank you Tom for being part of OurCreswell.
