Creating Custom Keyboard Shortcuts

CRESWELL - Recently we discussed the Windows Logo key and its role in managing some handy Windows shortcuts. This week we will explore shortcuts further and learn how to make our own keyboard shortcuts for common programs or applications. This saves desktop space by eliminating the need to clutter the desktop with additional icons.

Click on Start to launch the Start Menu
Choose All Programs and locate the desired program
Right Click the correct program and choose Properties
On the Shortcut Tab, click in the Shortcut Key box
Press the keyboard combination that you want to use to start the program. The combination must consist of one character (a letter, number, or symbol) and at least two of the following three keys: CTRL, ALT, and SHIFT.
Click OK.

The default combination is CTR, ALT; if you press only one character key in the Shortcut Key box, CTR, ALT will be added by default. Also keep in mind a keyboard combination will not work if it conflicts with shortcuts in an existing open program. Feel free to experiment with combinations and your favorite programs. You can always change the Shortcut Key box back to none.

A handy keyboard shortcut is just as simple a technique to launch a program as creating a desktop shortcut icon. The advantage of a keyboard combination is that it doesn’t clutter up your desktop space and you don’t need to minimize all your windows or go to your desktop to launch a commonly used program. The mouse is a great tool, but many common PC functions are just as well managed with the good old fashioned keyboard.
