Creswell Farmers’ Market Draws Crowds with Grand Opening
Even more vendors expected second week.
Library’s “Back Yard” proves to be the perfect site
Creswell Farmer’s Market was an immediate success when it opened last Tuesday under sunny skies. Library staff estimate that 150-200 people attended the market. Twelve vendors were glad they risked a commitment to the new market-several of them sold out before the 3-hour market ended.
A friendly, festive, small-town atmosphere prevailed as the market opened. Neighbors chatted, laughed, listened to live music, and shopped for produce, plants, and hand-made items. Children and grown-ups alike indulged in face-painting and blowing bubbles.
Library staff members expect this week’s market to be even more successful. 14 vendors are registered to attend and live music is planned for part of the event. Attendance is sure to grow as word of the market spreads through the community. “Creswell was ready for a Farmer’s Market,” said Library Director, Su Ikeda. “People were thanking us over and over again. It was almost embarrassing. My staff did a great job of making this happen, along with the help of some awesome volunteers. It’s our hope that eventually the growers will run the market themselves (maybe by next year)-but we’re happy to get it started, and we’d love to continue hosting it at the Library. We have the perfect location. It’s good to see it used,” she added. The 2-year-old Creswell Library occupies a remodeled hardware store and the market space is the former lumber yard.
The Creswell Library is located at 64 W. Oregon Avenue in Creswell. The market is held behind the library ( entrance on 1st Street). The Creswell Farmers’ Market will continue every Tuesday, 4-7pm, throughout the summer.
